Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Many limestones are composed from skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera.
Limestone contains often variable amounts of silica which is oxide of silicon known by is chemical formula as SiO2. in the form of chert Silica is found most commonly in nature as sand or quartz or siliceous skeletal fragment, and varying amounts of clay, and sand carried from the territory in by rivers.
The grains in limestone are mainly skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. These organisms secrete shells made of aragonite or calcite, and leave these shells behind after the organisms die.
Due to present impurities in the Limestone such as clay, sand, organic remains, iron oxide and other materials, many limestones exhibit different colors, especially on weathered surfaces. We find variation of colors from white to black, but most often manifests as grey, brown, greyish brown and light green to rusty red.
